Yesterday morning I was driving my 76 f150 4x4 w/360 and when I parked it in my driveway the smell of gas was stronger then normal so I popped the hood and looked down at the fuel pump and it was leaking from the line that feeds into the top (Im not sure if thats inlet or outlet but its the top line of the two). Well Ive had problems with that before, where the little metal tube (bout an inch long) that one end connects to the inside of the pump and the other to the inside of the rubber line, the end going into the pump vibrates loose and all I gotta do is tap it back in there tight. So I did that and ran my truck for a little and then drove to a gas station and checked it and it still seemed to be fine, no leaking. So I then proceeded to drive out to my dads. Not 10 miles later my truck starts acting really funny. Im cruising about 60 or so and I go to give it some gas and it revs up LITTLE but doesnt do anything, give it more gas and it starts to "catch" and go. Does this somemore so I pull off the highwah and Im pulling up to the light and it starts to die, I tapped the gas trying to keep it going but was sputtering and died. My friends pulled in behind me and told me they saw smoke comming out from under my truck. I tried to start it and as im cranking it over I hear yelling and screaming and I look back and black smoke is POURING out of my exhause along with some fireballs, the fireballs continue a few secs after I stopped cranking. First I thought it was timing chain but when we went and picked it up last night I tried to start it up after me and some buddies loaded it and it started...can anyone tell me what is happening?????
sounds like it flooded out. not the fuel pump, but the float in the carb stuck and filled the cylinders with gas. sounds like it is time to do a carb rebuild.
the fire ***** were excess gas in the mufflers, when you crank it it will ignite the gas and shoot fire ***** out the rear! kinda neat, but not the best for the engine
Can the floats sticking cause it to what it did on the highway? Giving it some gas and it not doing anything and then when I floored it, it "caught" and slowely moved.
I also dont know what kind of carb is on there, it is the stock carburator and I think its a Holley? 2 bbl

yes the float can do that. when you floored it it caught because it had enough air to burn the fuel.
you can take the carb off and take it with you to get the kit, that way the parts store can get the numbers they need and tell you what kind of carb it is.
if you havent done a carb rebuild before, they are not hard but if you can get someone who has done one to help it might be better.
Alright Im in the process of pulling the carb off and Ive gotten everything off except for the line that goes into the fuel bowl...cant get it off. Its a big copper lind and it looks like it screws into the fuel filter and then the filter goes into the bowl, right?
Well whatever its screwed into I cant get off and Im affraid of bending the line or breaking something. Any ideas on how to get it off??
if it is a solid metal line you may have to cut it. try 2 wrenches, 1 to hold the filter fitting, and the other on the line. if the line nut is rounded off you may have to use visegrips on it and then replace the line.
is it a 4 brl., or a 2 brl.? what year and engine do you have?
Well I me and a friend rebuilt the carb (its a 2 bbl and its a 1976 with a 360) and put it on and went to start it and no bueno, then I replaced the plugs figuring they fouled out cause of all the gas and it started . Thanks for your help. Now it just needs to be tuned a little bit so Im gonna take it to a muffler shop, I know the owner and he'll tune the truck including timing for like 10 bucks.
Thanks
