I hope someone can get me pointed in the right direction. Read some of the old posts - and think I've checked everything that's easy - so before I really tear into it I want to make sure there is no easy fix I'm missing.
I have a 1986 F350 Diesel Dually. The clutch will not disengage the transmission. It's a hydraulic clutch - checked the linkage from the pedal to the master cylinder-- looked ok. Check the slave cylinder and it pushes the arm/fork about 1 inch. Not sure if that is enough to disengage the transmission or not - bled the system and no help still only moves about 1 inch.
So my question is: Is 1 inch about the right amount of travel (fork movement) to disengage the clutch? If it is what else could my problem be? If it is not what else can I do to increase the amount of travel?
something else to look at that has been a problem with these trucks is that the firewall is too weak from the factory to handle the pressure put on it, and eventually cracks, allowing movement, taking away from the movement at the clutch fork. I had this problem too, as the clutch wouldn't competely disengage, grinding the gears a bit, especially for reverse. Had my wife push the pedal, and saw the firewall move almost an inch. Went to the local Ford dealer, and they were able to order the repair kit for me at about $15. Problem solved.
sounds like it is moving the arm enough. could be the tranny shaft is frozen in the pilot bearing, or the throwout bearing has come apart and is not pushing the pressure plate in.
sound like you are going to be pulling the tranny for a little investigation.
Thanks fellro86 and jim--
The firewall is not moving - but something to keep an eye on. Guess I'll be dropping the tranny for a look see unless anyone else has any other ideas (I'm still hoping but it's not sounding good...)
