have a new 04 escape. a/c is acting strange. around town at low speed, all is fine. on highway or at high enging speeds, stops cooling. does not matter if on regular or max a/c. once off the highway, it slowly returns to normal. i've noticed that when the problem occurs, a/c compressor cycles on and off a lot and only stays on for a second or so. also, a/c compressor is LOUD when this is happening. can't normally hear it very much.
You ever notice how an aerosol spray can gets cold if you spray it a long time? That is exactly how the ac system works. The compressor pumps the refrigerent into a very small orifice. The orifice sprays the refrigerant into the coil inside the car, making it cool. If there is any moisture in the system, it will actually freeze and turn to ice, clogging up the orifice. This blocks the flow, which is probably why the compressor doesn't sound happy, and why the low pressure switch keeps cycling the compressor on and off. If you turn the system off, then the frozen moisture will thaw out, and unclog the orifice, till you turn the system on again and it freezes up again.
It must not be cooling enough to freeze around town.
This is only a theory, and it should be under warrenty shouldn't it?
