I Am Borrowing My Parent's 91 Explorer Xlt Until I Purchase A New One. I Have Put More Money Into It Than I Care To Admit! I Went Shopping Today, Pulled Out Of The Parking Spot And Could Not Go Forward. No Forward Gears At All! They Told Me That The Transmission Was Rebuilt About 17,000 Miles Ago.
Please Give Me The Quickest And Cheapest Fix As I Would Hate To Put More Into It Than Its Worth! Thanks So Much!
Did the shifter somehow come loose from the tranny? Does it even make that "clunk" like it is trying to go into gear? You could be facing a really easy fix, not an expensive one. I had that happen on a tempo once it why I am asking. Ted
No "clunk" at all! I was on a slight hill so every gear that I tried, it just rolled backwards. Please say that it is an easy and quick fix~ My kids would love to go to the waterpark tomorrow instead of watching vehicle repairs as they have been doing the last few weeks. LOL!
It sounds like the linkage let go somewhere. I am not too familiar with explorers, but they should be similar to most. From the column there is a shifter bracket in the engine bay that connects to a rod that goes to the tranny. If it is a console shifter, I think they have a cable. The cable slipped off the console shifter in the tempo I was telling about. Ted
Thanks Ted! That sounds like best case situation. The shifter is on the steering wheel so could that still be the problem? From what I have read, it sounds an awful lot like the forward clutch in the transmission. Okay, back to praying that its something minor! Lauri
Okay, Dropped The Pan. The Fluid Smells A Little Burnt With Very Minute Flecks Of Metal (to Be Expected With High Mileage?). Do You Think Flushing The System Would Help At All?
Thanks Ted! Do You Really Think That Will Work? My Luck Isnt That Good. My Husband Says That He Cleaned Everything Up And There Are 2 Cylinders That Have 2 Wires Coming Out Of Each One. He Says One Looks Burnt And The Other Looks Fine. What Are These And Could They Have Something To Do With The No Forward Gears? Thanks!
