Im Tired Of The exhaust Manifold Leaks And Considering Replacing Them With Headers. The Left Side Was Done And Two Months Later The Right Side Has Developed A Leak. I've Read That It Is A Way Too Common Problem That Ends In bolt Disasters. Arrgh! I Was Thinking Of Doug Thorley Tri-y's And Was Wondering If Anyone Has Had Experience With Them. The Truck Is A 93' F-250 460 And Has To Retain The Air Pump And Y-pipe Single Exhaust Set-up. Any Experiences with thorley's Greatly Appriciated.
Hi BSHORT, i'm running Thorley 4 into 1 headers on a FE motor. The headers have a raised weld on the flanges for seal surface, not flat flange to head style. For gaskets I installed flat, dead soft copper gaskets, same at the collectors. No exhaust leaks at the heads and collectors. After a hot freeway run and retorque everything stays torqued, can't do that with fiber gaskets and no more blown gaskets. The 460 should have the same header seal surface. Instead of ordering the standard chrome I ordered them raw and had HPC ceramic coat inside and outside the headers and collectors after installing O2 bungs for fuel/air metering. I'm happy with Thorleys. Carl....o&o>....
I Was Reading On The Thorley Site That Their Headers Only Work With Their Gaskets. That Must Be Due To The Flange Surface You Described. The One Thing I Don't Like About Some Headers Is The Constant Exhaust Leaks At The Flanges. Since You've Had A Positive Experience I'll Check Into Them A Little Further. Thanks
BSHORT, thats a bunch of bull, the gaskets they use are manufactured by Bison, the early ones are almost black and of fiber, later ones look like Felpro's. A good parts store will carry them, a south San Francisco store has them. Check to see if embossed copper is available as well as flat copper gaskets. Make sure the header surface is flat with mill file and lap the collector flanges before installing. The ports in the copper gaskets were a perfect match to the headers, for the FE that is.Good luck, Carl..o&o>..
