I have a 1994 explorer with a 4.0 l V6 that I purchased about a year ago from a dealer. I got the truck with 80 K and have put 22 k miles on it. The truck has been great. I have noticed for the last 3-4 months that when I restart the motor when it is hot and has sat for a while (10 min or so) there is a bad misfire in one of the cylinders. It will clear rather quickly and all appears normal. Other symptoms are the truck has been using anti freeze and tonight the temp gauge was really high almost to the point of an over heat. With out doing a pressure test of the cooling system this has all the making of a head gaskets. What I want to know is there any recall on the head gasket on these motors?? I remember there being one on the 3.8 l motors.
Any ideas suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I had the same problem with a '93. I'd check the plugs for water washing but most importantly I'd quit trying to run it until I figured out for sure what's going on. Water won't compress in a cylinder and if you force it, by trying to start it with water in it , it could break something! I think you're going to have to pull the heads and replace the gaskets. Just pay really good attention when you torque the head and intake assembly back down....mike
