Beware of the site Consumerinfo.com. Appearently I signed up for a free credit check there 2 months ago, I dont remember doing it, but I guess I did. Flash Forward 2 months.
I check the balance in my checking account to see how much I had, and I see I have less than I thought, so I looked to see why, and I see 'CICcreditmonitoring' charged me $10. There was also a 1800 number on there so I called to see who they were and why I was being charged.
I gave them a call, and came to find out that they monitor credit reports, they gave me thier website address, and asked me if I wanted to cancel my subscription. I told them absolutely cancel it, and I wanted the money put back into my account that was taken out! She told me she couldn't do that, and asked me to look at the website to see if I remembered using it before, so I got off the phone and checked it out.
I went to the member login thing, and had them send me my password, and went to login. When I tried logging on I was met with a page asking me for a member number, and gave me a different phone number if I didn't have this number (which I didn't).
So, I call the number, and asked him for my member number, he said he would need all of my info (SSN, Name, CC#). I told him to hold up, and asked him, do I need a member number before I can access my account, and he said yes. For the first time, and only the first time that you log in you need your member number to access your member number.
I tell him my situation, that 2 months ago I signed up for this free trial, and was being charged (I looked back, and they charged me in june as well)- without knowing, not to mention, without having ACCESS to the account even if I did know about it!
He kindly explained that it did not matter whether or not I knew, or could even access my account, that after 30 days I would have needed to cancel the account or else I would be charged (which I was). So, I asked for my member number, gave him the info to get it, and expected to recieve it. WRONG. He told me that he could not give me my number at the moment, they needed 24 hours to generate a member number for me, and I should call back tomarrow to get it.
He thanked me for calling, I gave him a few choice words about the company he worked for, and I hung up.
Sorry for the long read, but this is really incredibly rediculous! beware this site.

About the best advice you will ever get is,NEVER,and I mean NEVER give your SSI# to anybody, either on-line or on the phone. There are too many bloodsuckers out there just waiting to get their hands on it.They scan the internet, and have been know to eavesdrop on phone lines. When I get a request for that info from ANYBODY I ask them to send me the proper forms and I will fill them out. This serves two purposes, one It keeps my info private and two it gives me my own copy of all biz transactions.
NEVER! give out e-mail,SS#,or CC# online! I have done it with large companies (wal-mart, best buy, etc) with no problems. I never get spam, suprise charges or anything. Stay off the **** sites also.
Let the bank help. Also, try the Federal Trade Commission, http://www.ftc.gov, they have more teeth than the BBB. If it's put on a credit card, call your credit card company up and cancel that charge. There are things you can do.
Definitely be careful anytime you see the word FREE attached. When you originally had to fill out the application, if you had to put your credit card info in.. that usually means you're getting a subscription and they're gonna charge you if you don't cancel this in X amount of time. I've been caught in this before. Usually there is nothing you can do if you forget about it or don't see it.
If anything ever prompts me for a credit card number if I am signing up for something free.. that throws up the red flag and I go looking for HOW MUCH I am going to get charged WHEN and WHAT I have to do to avoid it.
