Can anyone offer suggestions on how to determine the trim option (XL/XLS/XLT) of a 1998 Explorer by using the VIN number. I am in the process of buying a used Explorer from a dealer. He insists that the vehicle is an XLS but there is no "XLS" medallion on the rear door. My thought is that the vehicle is the base XL since there is no medallion on the truck.

Any thoughts or suggested web sites that can solve this "mystery" before I get frustrated and put a hammerlock on the dealer's head?
