I have a 2001 Sports Trac 4.0L, and it makes a deisel like noise when I accelerate to about 40 mph. I can hear the normal engine sound, but when I rev the engine I also hear secondary noise that sounds somewhat like a small deisel engine. I was told that it was probably preignition, and that there was probably build up on the valves sice it had been sitting in the car lot for some time, and after a few thousand mile, it would stop. Well, I have put about 5000 miles on it, and it is still there. The plugs and wires were changed about 10,000 miles ago, and they still look like they are in good condition. Anyone have any ideas as to what this nose is from?
Lots of things can cause preignition, and almost all relate to ignition and/or air/fuel ratios. Problem is, there are a whole lot of things that can affect both. Have you had anyone read out codes to see if the computer is trying to tell you something?
Are you running decent gas? I don't mean octane, I mean poor gas high in ethanol vs. good gas with anti-ping chemicals and detergents to keep things clean.
Also, are you sure it is a ping? Poor oil to the lifters can cause a sound that can be mistaken for a "deisel" ping. Also, there is a tensioner for the cam chain (if you have the Overhead Cam (OHC or SOHC) that can cause a noise that is sometimes mistaken for ping.
OPEN IT UP!
If its been sitting a while or reving low a lot you could have carbon buildup around valves. This won't allow them to seat properly, this can make the sound you described. Try taking it out for a spin and rev it up, and blow that junk out. just don't blow your engine.
