Well, the time has come to pull the plug on the 'ol cat. Atleast, according to the rest of the family. Now, I am not TOO opposed to this, being that the cat is TRUELY a mean cat. Simply hateful to anybody, and everybody, for no appearent reason. She's never been abused (had her long enough to know this, trust me...) either. Also, she has a certain spot on the carpet that for some reason is more appealing to her than the litter box??? Anyways, there is only ONE reason that I do not want to put her down, and that's because she is 20 yrs. old!!! Anyways, I was wondering if perhaps this was a record or not, and if I should attempt to prolong her. She doesn't really suffer, unless you consider chillin' all day long in the AC suffering??? Also, I don't mean for this to come off as crude, just was wondering what you guy's though??
We used to have 2 cats. One was grossly overweight despite our attempts to help her. She got to pukin and squirtin out the other end alot so we took her to the vet. Had to have her put down a couple days later. She never got to come home to say goodbye. She was 16.
Our other one moved to the new house with us. One day my brother found her under my folks bed, she had died in her sleep. She was 17 or so.
One thing to do is watch the cat's behavior. If its taken to hiding alot and staying in small dark places, it knows its time too. There's 2 times cat's hide like that. When they know their time is up or if its a female about to give birth.
But it's all a personal decision based on its quality of life. If its not in noticable pain or discomfort, let it hang around a while. Though 20 years is a pretty good, long life for a cat.
Sorry... rather not marre up the finish on my chrome bumper (just kidding!!)
Well, mainly the problem is the constant urination, puking etc... on the floors. Even if she is locked in the laundry room, she still will urinate right next to the litter box. Wouldn't say her quality of life is bad, but also wouldn't say it's good. Also, another reason that we think it's her time, is we are about tired of band-aiding guests hands after she has "welcomed" them. Trust me, it only takes one time, and the guest learn to never touch her again (strage thing, they never listen to me though when I tell them that she'll tag their hand... oh well, gotta learn for themselves).
Doesn't sound as if you're very fond of her. I know that feeling, I love cats and dogs, but I've encountered some over the years that just had a generally nasty disposition, just like some people. My mom has a 16 yr. old Siamese that is in great shape, and has a good personality. My grandfather on the other hand, has a cat that has never been abused, always treated with love, and is a real ***** anyway. I'd love to see it just go away, except it would break his heart. At 93, he's not up to starting over with a kitten. -TD

If she's urinating a lot, esp outside the litter box you may want to get her checked out at the vet. May have some sort of urinary problem. If she's just recently turned mean, that may also be a problem.
THAT'S all he needs, TWO nasty cats! They'd probably kill each other. The peeing on the carpet wouldn't be a problem though, the dog already does it and his sense of smell is gone so he can't tell. We sure can though! PHEWWW! -TD
Have you tried changing kitty litter? I have a cat that will not use it if we change the litter.. took a few tries until we found something she liked....
At the cats age, and from my own experience with numerous old cats, it sounds like she is going into either liver or kidney failure. Both cause the issues you are having. If the liver or kidneys are not too far gone, the vet might be able to prolong the life with medications. In any case, I'd have it examined before just issuing the death sentence. If let go too long, it can become a very painful death to the cat and an emotional trauma to the younger ones in your family.
Well, she's been doing this for a long time, atleast 1+ years. We've tried the new litter thing before, didn't work, also, she has been to the vet, and checks out just fine as far as UTI etc... they (vets) and we think it's just that she's lazy. Also, the fiercness (sp?) in this cat is nothing new, she has been like this for the last 20+ years.
After a short family GTG last night, I believe that the concensus was to take her in either today or monday. Only problem is getting her into the truck. Dang cat WILL NOT go outside, and any attempts in picking her up and heading towards the door, WILL result in bringing out the bad side in 'ol Wicket (didn't name her this because she was wicked, but rather because she looks like the E-walk, Wicket on Star Wars). So usually in order to take her anywhere outside of the house it is neccessary to place her in a pillow case and hold the case as far away from you as possible (claws like knives).
Back on the farm, we'd take a cat like this to Doc Remington. Ol' Doc could calm down just about any poor critter.
Hmm... well, although I am not all that fond of the cat, I do want to make sure that she dies half-way peacefully, and not starring down the barrel of my Franchi.
