Went from Lemoore CA, which is about 40 miles south of Fresno, to LAX. Averaging 75-80 mph on I-5, I got 21 mpg, drove 441 miles round trip. Truck drank right at 3/4 of a tank. I think I'll try the speed limit the next time and see how much it effects mileage.
Used to own a 96 PSD, 5spd, 4:11. Towed the wifes car on a flat-bed trailer from Houston, TX. to Annapolis, MD. Averaged 22mpg and it pulled like there was nothing back there.
strateman - just curious what year, build date, flash and if you are running a Predator or other programmer? My truck wouldn't get that kind of mileage at that speed if it was being towed!
I just got 22 mpg per computer (deduct one mpg for actual--not going to bother hand calc'ing anymore). 2003 PSD, CC, Lariat with flash in november, no load, no tow, doing 55 to 75 mph. MPGs are consistent, no chips.
On vacation a few weeks ago, I went to Niagra Falls NY from MD. I got 21.0 mpg. My 2004 F250 4x4 C/C 6.0 ran flawlessly up and down the mountians of PA. (beautiful country). I do have a vinyl bed cover which I think gives the mpg a boost.
Recent trip down I-5, then to the coast and back. Kept it at 67mph on the freeway (1900rpm), but then dealt with the winding coastal roads. Total of 575 miles. Averaged exactly 18mpg (hand calculated). I'm quite impressed, I'm assuming the freeway driving was really close to 20mpg. Rig has less than 4,000 miles so far.
You guys are making me jealous - my early 04 with the Dec flash won't approach what you report - BUT - I have an 05 on order and with any luck it will get good mileage.
What milage does the improvement in MPG start? have an 04 CC FX4, pulled my Travel trailer today just to check out the brakes etc. 170 miles at max of 2200 rpm for a short spell, mostly 2000 rpm. Gentle hills, 2 lane roads some interstate/4 lanes.
Got 11 mpg hand calc'd, overhead showed 10. Running empty I got about 14, overhead showed 18. So any ideas as to when the milage should improve if its gonna have 1300 miles on it now. Wife wants to know I keep tellin her, it improves with age just like her! She dont want to hear that stuff (VBG).
I guess I need to see what my "flash date" is because I have got 14-16mpg since I got my brand new '04 6.0 4x4. It went from 14 to 16 in just the first couple weeks but then dropped to 15 when I got it lifted (6") w/ 35" BFGs.
Do you need to pull the codes to see what the "flash date" is? Is the truck build date the one thats on the door sticker?
BTW - The jump from the stock Pirelli tires and horrible stock shocks made an enormous difference in handling. The new shocks are Bielstiens and the tires are 35" BFG AT's. Sure the new taller front springs added to the stability but the truck is way more stable with the lift but I believe a lot of it is due to the tires/shocks.
kemerick...
the door date is the truck build date...
the engine build date is on a sticker on the left "valve" cover toward the back of the engine... BIG Barcode and a date in the format of 14 Apr 04 for 14th day of April 2004..
or is it 04 Apr 14 for the same date.... ????!!!?!
but it is a different date than the door date (hard to build the engine after the coach

You have such a way with words! I get 14-15 around town and 18 or so on highway empty. That is stock. Most tire and suspension mods will drop that. Mileage is dependent on lots of variables. These trucks are not very aerodynamic. What kind of travel trailer do you have? I suspect the high profile 5th wheel are going to act like a drag chute on your already non too aerodynamic beveled brick SD.
Its a pull behind travel trailer about 4000lbs or so. I am not old enough for a 5th wheel or a motorhome yet. Still have too many toys to want to take along to places. Got the long bed truck so I can put motorcyle or other stuff in it
The 11mpg is better than the 8 or so in my f250 gasser but after reading all the claims here I was just wonderin when this one should loosen up nd start getting better milage. Wife wants me to drive it to work (150 miles RT) for a week to see if miles do help. Told here when we got it I wanted a 2WD but she liked the FX4 and the price was right, now she has some 2d thoughts. Anyhow we both really like the truck just hope we can get some better milage in the near future.
Miles do help. I also have a 4x4. No mods other than Predator at 65HP setting and I use the Stanadyne Performance Formula almost all the time. It's not broke in until 10,000 miles. Some would argue it takes longer. Take it for a long drive and put some miles on it.
