That was posted on the third-gen site. It actually works pretty well apparently. The "thing" with the wires coming out is a load cell. He uses the truck axle brakes to slow the car and measures the force on the load cell. As you can see, it isn't quite complete as he needs a ramp to the wheels, etc. It is still work in process. It's got me thinking . . . .
You can laugh but it's pretty ingenious if you ask me. He's got a working dyno for a few hundred bucks and some sweat.
Kwikk, I believe that is a strain gauge. From the looks of it he might be semi [pun] educated. What it looks like to me he's doing is running the camaro up to speed applying drag via the truck brakes {notice the airlines} then measuring the amount of force on the strain gauge. With some heavy math he should be able to calculate HP and torque. That's my $.02. Or he's just trying to get a running start on good beer run.
If you look closely, you will see that he actually has used it, there is a definate tread pattern on the driven wheels. But it still looks like an redneck sad ending in progress. "ya'll watch this!"
At work we have a gauge like he is using. It's the "2" shaped piece of metal connected to the chain. Ours reads out in pounds (weight) and works in either direction (squeezed or pulled apart), and has a 2000# limit.
Dude, thats awesome. Thats not redneck, thats some good engineering!! (well, kind of??) Kwikkordead, thats a load cell, and those thing aren't too cheap. I've researched and purchased some to go on test machines for the company I work for. I don't know how this dyno works, but someone put some thought and money into it. It would be pretty cool to have your own dyno.
Until the chain breaks, or the axle shaft that it's anchored to bends and the chain slips off, then the camaro launchs like the space shuttle. You could sell tickets to see that happen.
