Well I'm back! More problems with my 99 ranger 4x4 . I bought the truck used about 2 months ago and soon after I discovered I had a problem with my hubs. Sometimes the hubs would not lock in and nothing would happen and sometimes they would lock in, and when they did I would hear a loud grinding noise from the front wheels. The problem continued to get worse and worse and finally the grinding sound would presist even in 2wd. I took my truck into my mechanic and droped close to $500 on new hubs. Well i got the truck back a week ago and got a chance to take it off road, the 4x4 performed flawlessly, however, after leaving the trails I turned the switch into 2wd high, and that horible grinding noise came back. I slowed my truck to an idle and put it back in 4x4 high, drove a quarter of a mile on a dirt road, then at idle i switched it back to 2wd high. The grinding noise went away and I tossed it off as normal. All day today that same grinding noise has been coming and going while in 2wd. The odd thing about it is my 4x4 does work, unlike before it only makes this noise in 2wd high. I got under my truck and turned the front drive shaft while the truck was in 2wd. It turns with ease as it should, but only the right half shaft turns. So I tried turning the left half shaft and it wont go. Its like my left hub is permanently locked in. Basically Im wondering where to go from here, this dosnt seem like a normal problem, my hubs are still covered under warenty so most likely i can take it back to the shop and they'll fix it for free. But Im wondering if ther may be a bigger problem then my hubs, maybee my front differential or transfer case?
I had this problem on mine. It was an O-ring that was missing on one of the hubs. It does not come with the hub and is a separate item you have to order. This may not be your problem but it fixed the same issue on mine after spending $1300 on hubs, wheel bearing assemblies and a diagnostic test on the transfer case. I thought I was in a Mastercard commercial. 500 for this 300 for that .30c oring - Priceless
