ive got a problem and cant figure out whats wrong where. i have a 1971 f100 with a 302 with a 4speed manual shift. it keeps loseing water but only to the top of the fins in the radaitor. i replaced the radiator, radiator cap, the water pump, all hoses, both head gaskets and intake gaskets had the heads magnafluxed and the are fine and the heater core is bypassed. all new freeze plugs. i cant find any water leaking anywhere. if anyones got any ideas it would shure be nice cause i have to put water in everyday otherwise it gets hot.i want to thank you all in advance for all your help.
have someone put a pump up pressure tester on it and pump it up that will usually tell you what is leaking by how fast the pressure drops. it will also let you look for the leak while it is sitting still. nice if you can get it on a lift also, that way you can look underneath at the motor and see if your leak is there.
If I fill my radiator all the way up and drive it a while it always lowers the water down until it's about 1 1/2" down from the top. There it will stay indefinatly. It's aways done that so that's where I run it. It never has overheating problems. Remember these systems are not like the new stuff with all the recovery tanks and such.

What pressure cap you running? Could be just coming out the overflow. You need to let run until warm after you've topped it off and find the "leak." It also could be a small hole in the cooling fins somewhere and because the rad. is hot, evaporating before you can actually see it easily. So look for small amounts of moisture on both sides of the cooling fins too.
Hmm, well it sounds like it's ok! Thats what happens when you over fill it. That extra water has to go some place when it's hoter you know it's like ice it expands. This is why the later yrs there was a recovery tank. A place for it to go other than on the ground under your truck. Put in antifreeze and you will find it under your truck the next day. Ps there use to be a razed fill line
or a note on the radiator tank to not over fill system. Or this would happen.

You can buy a system pressure tester for $80 and find a leak pretty fast using it. Sounds more like your system is being overfilled, as others have mentioned.
