Too much pressure.....

My son has 79 302(supposdley rebuilt) in his F100. We have a problem, we have oil bieng sprayed aroung the engine compartment. I can find some fresh oil aroung the dirstbutor. Some has also pooled in the little recess right below the thermosat. But some actually looks like it's coming up the dipstick tube. Any Ideas where/what to start looking for. This also only happens under load. Can't find it at Idle. Yes I've tired the hood off, hang on the roof for dear life, driving down the driveway. But it's in front of the engine.Could something be causing too much pressure in the oil pan, pushing oil up the dipstick? Another thought was timing chain cover and the fan is just speading this oil everywhere. Any thoughts would be helpful.Another my son recently changed intake manifold and carb, then back. Without remove the Dist. But I think this was preexiting(man my sp is bad).

Thanks
Joe

I would grab a couple of cans of engine degreaser, clean the engine very well, and wipe it down with paper towels until the oil and grease is gone. Then take it on a short run (or as many as it takes), and see where it is leaking from.

Also check that the oil filter has only one gasket. I inadvertantly installed a filter with the existing gasket still installed and had a very thin, high pressure oil leak that appeared far away from the point of origin. It looked like the oil was coming from the side of the block - 8 inches away! Also, you have a correctly functioning PCV?

I'm sure by now you have made sure that it's not overfull with oil. Next I'd check to see if the PCV valve is functioning. If it's working correctly I would then do a dry, then wet compression check, since you seemed to indicate that the engine rebuild may be questionable. If you are getting a lot of blowby it may be too much for the PCV system to deal with. Thereby causing internal engine pressure force oil out past the seals. A quick test is to place your hand over the oil filler while the engine is running. If all is functioning well it should pull a vacuum. If not check the PCV valve. Good luck.

All,
If the oil leak has occured after the manifold swap, there is about a 100% chance that the front manifold seal is leaking. This can be a very difficult seal to get correct, especially after the heads have been resurfaced and the manifold sits slightly lower. During your reinstallation, throw the front seal away and use a heavy bead of RTV on both the manifold and block. Let it dry for a day, and give it a shot. I've done this successfully at least a half dozen times. I have also had the cork seal slide out more than once.
Secondly, your diagnosis of oil coming out the dipstick is a grim symptom. There is a, slim to no chance, that oil from the dipstick tube would puddle behind the distributor without coating the rest of the engine compartment. Reconsider this diagnosis as it means that the motor will have to be rebuilt again.
Good Luck,
KingFisher
