'91 ford 5.0 w/e4od shift problems

Can you help? My 91 ford f-150 w/ 5.0v8 and e4od tranny has been shifting rough. Engine runs great but shifts very hard into 2nd and 3rd and especailly downshifting back into 1st. Coincidently..this started occuring the same time as my cruise control stopped working. Assuming it's electronic. A mechanic friend of mine mention a speed generator but this is unknown to me.

Any ideas?? Fluid and tranny filter changed to no avail.

have seen this posted before,
many say to disconnect the battery for 15 minutes ,
reconnect and see how it acts then,
but may be only a temp solution,
check the transmission section, for further help,,,,,,
