I checked the timing it was at factory settings. Tried better gas that didnt work. Then someone suggested decarbonizing my engine. They said to try tranny fluid instead of water because it wouldnt hurt anything. Is this correct.
A few things to check. Check that your base timing is not advanced way to far (set to spec specified by the factory).
Also, is it running hot? A hot running engine will ping a lot. If you don't have a gauge, see if you can rig one up somehow. Don't depend on your overheat light.
Does your truck have a MCU? Microcomputer Control Unit.
I don't know what year your truck is or what smog it has, but one thing that can cause Pinging during acceleration is a malfunctioning spark retard solonoid.
Spark Retard Solonoid is under the Four Multi Colored Vacume Switches on the right side of the picture.
Typical MCU for 1981 to 1983, 4.9L California, and some high altitude models located on driver fender well.
This is just a shot in the dark, probably wont help you at all but, worth a try...
The MCU Doesn't self test this component either!

I used teh tranny fluid since my enine was running at a decent temperature and it has no computer of any sort. The timing is at original factory specs. The pinging has stopped and im a happy . Be sure to do teh tranny flluid out in teh boondocks since it created so much smoek i couldnt see across teh street.
