there is a vacuum line coming out of the carb., and going to the left valve cover. What would I have to do to not have it in the valve cover? Because with my new valve covers, the line doesn't quite reach. So can I let it just hang there?¿ One more question, there is a little box lookin thing on the bolt on the back of the valve cover, what is that?¿ I'll get pictures in my gallery.(72 F-100)
Try to get a longer hose so the PCV can reach into the valve cover, you really need to run it.
The other thing is a solenoid valve for the vacuum advance, part of the NOX (smog) device. Looks like there's no hose connected to it right now. I'd take it off and save it in a box.
That vacuum line is the "PCV" valve. The "positive crankcase ventilation" valve. It draws any fumes from the crankcase and burns them by using vacuum at the bottom of the carb to draw them into the motor. Not a serious issue, but I would add to the hose to make it reach. Back in the early days, they had "road draft tubes" which was a pipe that hung down under the motor and used passing air to "vacuum" the fumes from the motor. This also caused major oil spots when you parked. Find yourself a long piece of 3/8" hose and re-connect it.
As for the little gadget??? Looks like some kind of solenoid??? Need a better view to determine.
