The tuner/amp on my 1997 Mountaineer went out. I purchased a new head unit but found out the hard way that the head unit does nothing. The real problem was in the back, the amp/tuner. This is the JBL system found on many Explorers and on the 97 Mountaineer. They changed the design in the 98 and up models.
Does anyone have any tips on switching the amp/tuner module? How do you get the plastic screws that hold the plastic mold out without breaking them?
I posted my problems with this stereo a few months ago, and was insulted when someone told me that it was my CD player skipping. This isn’t a loose wire, or a short in a wire, or a 3 sec CD skip. Just trust me on that one.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
The tabs are easy to break (broken a few myself). I have a pin puller. It looks like a flat piece of metal with a groove cut out of the middle. You slide it under the head of the pin and pull the pin that way. I think Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc, sells them. I made my own years ago when I saw one at a stereo shop.
