I get a slight shudder in the rear (3.72 LS) on acceleration from a dead stop, all i've noticed so far.

it frightens me what these service dept.'s come up with...airbags? leaf spring bushings? with all the TSB's and documentation regarding the driveshaft and LS axle problems, why won't they address those concerns or rule them out first, then start making up wacky service orders at their own leisure. The old "have to see the forest before the trees" thingy.

Update.

Yes I know it has been awhile.

Dealer replaced my clutch packs. Dealer stated this was a limited slip issue and when the 2004's were produced they set them to tight. Packs were replaced and set properly. No more shudder on turns.

Wow, so much learned from this. I just bought a 04 Lariat SuperCab 4x4, 5.4L. It had 6000 miles on it when I bought it. I have noticed a slight slipping sensation and minor clunk. Also, have heard and felt the binding when in reverse. Vehicle gets about 13-14 miles per gallon. I'll be taking it to the shop with Ammo in hand from discussions on this board. Thanks guys.

I've got the NON-LS with a CLUNK,...NOT a shudder. Dealer lubed yoke and it fixed it for about 500 miles. Taking it in for second time. Not savy with the rear diff,..but are the clutch packs only on the LSDs??
Anyone had a "cure" for the NON LSDs?

Also, went on to infotraxx and read the TSB's as printed for dealers. Saw what the recommended maintenance procedures were for the problem from FMC. It is nice to see the TSB numbers but it is much better to read them as they are for the service techs.

My FX4 went into the shop for the third time today for the same clunking noise. I'll update you all when I get it back from the dealer.

Has anybody had the slip yoke clunk repaired permanently? Greasing it every few months is a joke. Mine has been greased 4 or 5 times. Obviously there is a design flaw.

Would you mind posting the procedure for maintenance/fix for this problem as outlined on infotraxx?

I would be violating their policy if I did that. They are also one of the site sponsors, I believe. So administration would probably frown on that also.

I realize that, I was just looking for a generalization. I am not looking to get you in trouble or anything .

PC,

I've owned 3 Ford trucks over a span of 20 years and all 3 of them had that damn clunk. Grease it up, it's quite for about 2 months.

Yes, you would think Ford could fix this with a 20 year timeframe!

I feel like putting a zerk fitting on the housing and pump it full of grease like I did with my old 95 f-150. What a pain.

Where is the slip yoke?
I'm having the same problem but only in 4 x 4. In 2 wheel drive, there's no slip / clunk feeling or noise. In 4x4, feels like there's slipage and little clunks. All 8 U-joins are new. Had the transfer case open and looks minty. I figure if it's the clutches in the rear diff that it would do it in 2 wheel drive also but it doesn't. Is there clutches in the front diff? This is an '86 F250 4x4 dually.

I got my FX4 Screw back yesterday from the dealer. The dealer said the cause of the clunk was bad backlash, bad ring gear @FIFF (what ever that means). Correction: Rear axel housing assembly overhauled. So far everything sounds good, no more clunking on acceleration from dead stop.

posted in this thread a few months ago with my clunk problems...

dealership was initially going to do the clutch pack thing (tsb).....

but they looked at it again and devided it was a u-joint that needed to be replaced and a few other things...

so they did this:

1) flashed my PCM up to the latest.....
2) greased slip-yoke......
3) replaced u-joint....

it's been about 8 or 9,000 miles later and the clunk has never returned, not event once......
