Idiot Light!

Any way to get the "CHECK ENGINE" light to go off permanently? I disconected the battery for a few minutes and it was off for a couple days.
Don't tell me I've got to go to a dealer!?

Read your codes and find out what is making it go on. Then you can fix that part(s).

Like Torque1st said, there is a reason why the idiot light comes on. On my 89, the only time it has come on in the past 12 years was the O2 sensor. Take it to Autozone for a FREE code reading.

autozone told me that they only read the 96' to present computers
even though i thought that obd II would read old and new computers

If you search this forum or look in your Haynes manual, it tells you a way to pull the codes with a paper clip. I did this and it was simple but I don't recall how to do it now.

yeah there is a pattern of flashes and different length pauses but im not sure i can keep count that well!

Love ya FTE! I'm stunned at the quick and incisi response. Thank you all. I was told by a machanic once that they program the light to come on after so many miles and there is a strong likelyhood that nothing is wrong. But I'm thumbing through my dogeared Haynes manual as I type! Thanking you.
