Oil is like a religion or superstition, you are liable to hear anything. This is a link to a site that seems to have some people with a realistic view. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com
Why not go 20W50 Valvoline or other brand if its always reasonably warm where you are. I've always thought that multi viscosity is a crock of ****. I can't see how an oil can be one way at startup then suddenly change. Its either a thin oil or a thick oil in my mind, not both. I think 5w30 and 10w30 are too light for a V8 truck engine especially if its used as a truck.
The term multi-viscosity is misleading, there is nothing magic about it. 5w30 is 5 weight oil with some of the lubricating properties of 30 weight oil, it doesn't change with temperature except for what you can see with your own eyes.
I e-mailed mobil 1 about putting synthetic oil in my motor that has higher mileage, and has never had synthetic in it before.asked them about the gasket&seal leaking problem that might accure by using their oil. they replied by saying, if your motor doesn't leak oil now or consume oil then its safe to go ahead and use it. but I'm still leary of the leaks, cause after all it wouldn't be their problem, I guess if I could get some guarantee in writing. but I'm sure they would say it was leaking before, or that its just old. I guess a guy just has to know when to leave well enough alone.
Yeah, you are better off staying with the dino sauce. Your engine propably does have leaks somewhere, just very small ones that are caked up with crud. Synthetic will wash that out and make it leak. If you ever get a new engine, the key is break in on conventional (6,000 miles) and then switch to synthetic.
I just started using Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 10W-30 in my 460 on the current oil change at 85,000 miles. So far, no leaks, no problems with lubrication, and I'm at 86,500 miles. I also have noticed an increase in mpg's. Instead of 9-10 now, I'm seeing 11-12. However, I believe I have lost 3 injectors due to trash in them from an old fuel filter, but I don't think the oil has anything to do with that problem.
Here's my question.....How long do you think an engine would last running with fully synthetic oil all of its life compared to one with conventional oil, both changed every 3,000 miles?
Well....
1. Changing synthetic every 3,000 miles is just wasting money, there's no need for it. It's made to provide greater protection for the engine and last longer doing it. You wouldn't be doing much, if anything, by changing it that often. A lot of the time the good ole dino oil is perfectly fine at 3,000 miles.
2. A lot of people believe an engine that could last 200,000 miles running conventional oil could go on to 400,000 miles running synthetic. I think I’m one of them.
I'm currently debating whether or not to switch my 300 at 265,000 miles.

I agree changing synthetic every 3000 miles seems like a waste, cause it has better lasting quailities, but the only problem I have would be running dirty oil past say the 4000 mile mark, cause after all isn't that whats going to wear things out is the dirty oil. I would have a hard time pulling the dipstick and looking at dirty oil, and saying ohwell its synthetic I'll run it another 4000 miles, I must have a mental block I guess.
My truck has 148,000 miles, I run synthetic 5 qts. Mobil 1 0w-30 and 1 qt. Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer, I have no leaks, runs like factory brand new... I attended an Oil seminar in Detroit (I was a Car Dealer Technician for years)...Synthetics are proven superior over conventional oils. In every test shown... I change the oil every 5,000 miles, however at 2,500 miles I change the filter and add a quart... if synthetic is good enough for Turbine Jet engines in the Aircraft industry, and good enough for NASCAR race engines than it's good enough for me...I use it in every thing I have lawn mowers, snowblowers, compressors, you name it!!!
I'm in total agreement that the synthetics last longer before viscosity breakdown, however I've always thought the reason I change oil every 5000 kms is because the oil is dirty, I don't think a synthetic oil is going to stay cleaner? I stay with the regular garden variety 10w30, but change it religiously. and spend a little extra on the filter, and usually add a litre of rislone for extra peace of mind. just my thoughts
I have a 89 F150 with 236,000 miles I use walmart full synthetic and my truck is fine it does not leak... It purrs like a kitten.. So there is nothing really to worry about...
i have a 94 f150 4x2 with a 5.0 in her and i started using full synthetic oil at about 105,000. It leaked a lil bit of oil at first, but after about 3 oil changes it stopped, plus i started putting in a quart of Lucas Synthetic Oil Stablizer with my 4 quarts of Mobil 1. it burns it a lil bit i usually add about 2 quarts and oil change. but i have about 140,000 on it now and i drive about 2 hours every week usually 2's to see my g/f at her college, thats not counting my drive to my school, so u put the miles on it thats prob why i use about 2 extra quarts, but she runs strong and still beats the 99 f150s in town with there 4.6's in them so i am pleased, lol
thanks jake
All I know is that I am running Wal-Mart 10w-30 Full synthetic in a 3800 olds minivan and I am VERY GLAD I am My wife was driving it on the interstate and a plastic return nipple off the intack broke and she lost all the coolant. The check engine light came on, but it had done int before due to computor, so she didn't stop. She drove several miles and them looked down to see temp gauge pegged!!!! She then pulled off interstate and heard clanking noises coming form engine. I thought engine was shot, had it towed to my mechanic. Two hours latter I get phone call to come and drive van. In mine and my mechanics' disbelief it ran great and has been running great for the last 20,000 mile, and still is(now has arround 124000 on it) We bought the van with arround 72000 on it and switched engine to syn. It is of my and my mechanics beliefe that the oil is what saved the engine. My wife agrees, but also believes it was divine intervention. Thanks and God Bless John
just to add... If you're ready to shell-out $440,000 for a beautiful new Porsche Carrera GT, the 605 HP V-10 comes pre-loaded with synthetic oil, as do all the Porsche models, as well as Mercedes-Benz. I'm in the process of installing a new 351W into my '64 F-250, from everything I have read regarding the synthetics, I'm there 100%. Probably the closest I'll ever get to owning (or having something in common with) that Carrera.
