hi guys, i have a 77 f-100 with a 351m rebuilt just about 1000 miles ago and while im driving doen the road it seams that im not burning all the gas when i really punch it becasue it studers a little bit, i believe it may be off on the front metering screws on the carb (edelbrock 600 cfm) im i right and how much should i adjust each screw? thanks tye
The front screws are the idle mixture screws, they mainly affect idle.Ck your timing . What is your total timing at 3000 RPM,should be 34-39 degrees.Does the distributor have vacuum advance.
yes i had the timing checked and yes it does have a vacuum advance the distributor is also brank new too, the truck runs ok im just trying to get max performance out of it. it thought if i turned down the scews a little bit it would push more air and less gas so it would burn more efficently but guess not
BCS is right on that one...the screws are for idle mixture only. The Edelbrock can have jets and metering rods changed that would directly effect the performance.
One way of telling if you are not burning the gas properly is to remove a few spark plugs and look them over. Also, when you "punch" it...try using your door mirrors and look back...do you see any black smoke? If yes...then you are running rich. (a little is normal...)
Just a FYI...when you turn the screws, all that is being affected is the amount of air flow. Has nothing to do with fuel directly. So turning the screws "IN" would reduce the amount of air, thus resulting in more fuel. Go the other way...and the opposite is true.
