I finally have some spare cash so I'm going to finish off my truck's sound system. I'm building a dual 6.5" driver box to fit behind the passenger seat (it will make it...just barely). The 6 CD changer is already behind my seat and the XM unit is going to cram in there as well. My question is...where in the hell am I going to be able to fit the amp? Under the seat seems like it would be a tight fit. The amp I'm looking at is 10"L X 10"W X 2"D. Know any place to wedge it in?
On my 2000 Reg cab I had 4 8" subs (2 behind each seat), 2 amps, and a capacitor, all behind the seat, AND it still went all the way back. My amps were vertically stacked on top of each other behinf the seat in the middle. One of my amps was bigger than the one you're looking for, and everything fit just fine. Use your imagination!
Thanks for the advice, Rancha. I also had the idea that I could unbolt the passenger seat and put 1" spacers on the mounts to give me just enough clearance to squeeze the amp in under it. Would this interfere with anything?
Depends on how tall the person is that sits over there! Only problems I could forsee may be an issue with the seatbelts and airbag, or a heat dissipation problem for the amp. If you can get one with a built-in fan, I'd definately recommend that. It may also look a little goofy with the passenger seat 1" higher than the rest of the seats.
can you put the xm unit under the seat and the amp behind? i believe the xm tuners are rather thin aren't they?
That, too, is an option. It's just a bit under a month to my birthday so its going to be a bit before I actually get the XM in. I already ordered the drivers so it's likely I'll have the box and amp in first.
I'd definately agree with putting the XM unit under the seat, and the amp behind. I also know people who have had the XM unit installed in their dash, usually on the passenger side near the air handling equipment.
The drivers arrive tomorrow. Once completed, the box will have dual 6.5" drivers handling a total of 300W RMS @ 2ohms. The amp I'm looking at puts out 320W RMS @ 2ohms. I'll take some pictures and post them in my gallery once I'm done.
