How do i remove my steering wheel

i bought an aftermarket steering whell for my 1994 eddie bauer edd bronco, but i cannot figure out how i remove the stock one. i removed the airbag and took that main lug out of the center but it wont budge. please let me know how i can do it. i will save me alot of money if i can just do it my self, so i figured id try here first. BTW it has cruise control on the wheel, just for a better picture of what im working with. Thanks Jason

I've used a harmonic balancer puller, but about any type puller that you can put a couple of long bolts through will work. If you look at the wheel there are a couple of threaded holes in it. Find some bolts that are long enough to go through the puller and the correct thread for the holes ( I'm pretty sure they are metric, but I won't swear to that.) Loosen the nut in the center of the wheel a couple turns, assemble the puller, and it should pop the wheel loose pretty easily. I've never been able to just pull the wheel off by hand, although a lot of others have had success with that. Make sure the bolts you use are the correct thread, and are threaded in as far as possible, since the center of the wheel is fairly soft metal and you can pull the threads right out if you aren't careful.

By the way, does the new wheel still allow for the air bag and cruise buttons? I may need to replace mine some day if it gets worn more, and hadn't seen any that would.

Good luck.

Ok, ill see if any of my friends have one, cuase i dont... my tool selection is limited. So just pull it out then?? cause it didnt even budge when i used my hands, but i can se a puller being more powerful lol. The steering wheel is a MOMO and only has a horn button but i dont ever use crusecontrol and i am not a fan of airbags, all the times ive ever heard of one going off they did more damage to the person, pluss i wear a seat belt religiously so ill be ok. NEways Just use a puller then, eh. Thanks. BTW if you need a new steering whell ill sell mine i wont need it anymore and it is only a little worn on the top. you can buy the airbag too but that will cost more, lol. Thanks -Jason

If none of your friends has a puller, I'm pretty sure Autozone and similar places have them to rent, they may even have a specific one for steering wheels. You might still need to pick up the bolts, but they're cheap. I didn't look for mine but they are around a 5/16 fine thread, about 3" long IIRC. The puller will have plenty of power, plus it is a steady pull instead of a sudden yank so it isn't as hard on other parts of the steering column like u-joints and such.

I'm not crazy about the air bags either, but use the cruise a lot (prevents speeding tickets!).

How did you remove the airbag? I have a 94 EB, too, and I want to replace the steering wheel, but don't know how to remove the airbag without it going off.

Thanks,
Jerry

I bought a steering wheel puller at the auto parts store for about ten bucks. It's just a steel plate and a bunch of different size bolts and nuts to thread into the column. Works like a charm.

I don't know about airbags though, that's a whole different story. I think that you have to disable the sensors first, and then remove the wheel as normal. But please make sure before you do it.
