I had RK done 20 years ago..... went from 20-200 both eyes to 20-20. Now, only need reading glasses for close up work / newspaper. I wish Lasik had been available then. Remember, there's no Plan B. Do your homework on the doctor & talk to patients of the doctor. Visit at least two. Good luck !

I wouldn't want any cutting on my eyes, but my mom (82 years old) had it and can see like the Mount Palomar telescope now.

Make sure you get the IntraLasik. That is where it is total laser surgery. Some Lasik surgeons still use a blade to cut the flap on the eye then use the laser for correction. Cutting the flap with a Laser allows for a bigger flap to be cut which will reduce any chance of seeing starbursts at night when you look at a light. I had it done a year ago March and it is great. When camping no hunting for a flashlight to put in contacts or trying to keep the dirt off your hands. Do get the best doctor possible not the cheapest.

I guess wearing those terminator glasses the old folks wear wouldn't be that bad

Naaa, the doc will take a picture (map) of your eye and program a machine to do the lasing.

I had PRK about 5 years ago. Not a problem since.

"People say that the more procedures done the better"
Can't remember who posted that, but, according to the docs I work with, that is a pretty good guideline to use.

Best of luck to you.

I had my Lasik done June 3rd of this year. I have loved every minute since!!!!!!!!!!! The medical staff tells you that after you go home, you'll want to take a nap. When I woke up about 4 hours later I could see with no problems at all.

I personally know of one guy that had un-repairable problems. Myself....I will stick with my glasses.

I have had several friends that had Lasik done and all of them said that it was the best thing that ever happened to them. They all researched their doctor and in fact used Dr. Green of Wichita kansas- which is well known in the Lasik world, anyway just make certain some Dr. with little experience doesn't get ahold of you. Otherwise I would say an excellent investment. I can not wait until I have the money to do it.

I had LASIK in May 2000. My eyes were -10 (that's bad). Ever since I was eight (I'm 48 now), I would need a new prescription every three years or so. I didn't expect that to change post LASIK, so when I was shopping around, I found a Dr that offered free lifetime corrections. They were the most expensive $4400, but I figured I'd be able to have at least a couple corrections; they can only remove so much cornea. Last year, when I went for my annual exam, they said they would not do any adjustments because my cornea would be too flat! I was p!ssed!
One week after that exam, I noticed a lot of floaters in my left eye and some light flashes. Went back to the Dr and was diagnosed with a torn retina. They couldn't say whether it was related to LASIK or not.
There are several techniques used to repair retinal tears. Cryotherapy is what they used on mine. They take a poker type device that is attached to a tank of liquid nitrogen. The probe is placed on the outside of the eyeball over the tear and the probe tip freezes the area forming a scar tissue. This seals the tear and bonds area back to the eyeball. It was quite uncomfortable with a sensation similar to an ice-cream headache. Fortunately it is a quick procedure. On my follow-up visit a week later, they found another tear and had to repeat the cryo!
A year later, all is well so far. I still have floaters in my eye, like looking through a snow globe, well maybe not that bad, but I can still see.
This last April, I finally had to break down and get a new pair of glasses. The nice thing is that I'm starting over from scratch and I don't have the real thick lenses like I had before LASIK.
If I had to do it over again, I'm not sure what I would do.

I had mine done on 4/1, yes, April Fool's Day. My vision wasn't terrible, but I definitely needed my glasses if I wanted to do anything besides take a shower or read. Now, I've got 20-15 vision and can make out 3 letters on the 20-10 line. Weirdest sensation I've ever had, and would go thru it again just for the sensation. Yea, I'm a sicko. They used the wavefront mapping LASIK machine on me. Really, it's more about the machine than the doctor, but he still plays a role in the process.

Alright, I'm digging this up from a while ago but I'm curious if anyone else has any new news in the past year on eye surgery. I'm looking at doing it this winter or next spring and was recently told about a procedure that can be done at the same time as the laser eye surgery which will improve night vision drastically. My night vision is already pretty poor and I'm as blind as a bat without contacts.

I actually went in yeasterday for the consultation. I guess the new technology is wavefront. They told me that the halo or fuzzy spots that occur mostly with night driving can now be corrected with it. Supposidly how it works is they shoot a flat light on your eye and it bounces back and capture it. If there is a imperfection it distorts the light and makes the image wavey so they know where the problem spots are so the laser can be adjusted to that specific area. I can't see good without contacts and been wanting to have it done as well.
