Ford Performance headers.

Anybody here try the 'shorty' headers Ford sells through the racing division?

Yes I have some and have been running them for a year and half. These are nice headers and make a noticable power difference if you've got a good aftermarket exhaust system. One thing that I didn't like is they come unfinished, just bare stainless steel so I used high temp header paint and cured it like the manufacturer suggested and it has held up great. If you decide to do shorty headers make sure when you bolt them on to not tighten the y-pipe down until you have both headers installed and the studs and bolts started, another thing buy some good header gaskets. The ones the headers come with aren't that great, I'm running Percy's dead soft aluminum with Permatex high temp ultra copper silicon with no leaks whatsoever. When I put my shorties on I re-torqued them everday for a week and have no loose bolt problems. These suggestions will make life alot easier.

Thanks for the response. Good information. What truck do you have them installed on? I'm curious as to why you painted them. Just for appearance? I presume they bolt up to a stock or similar 'Y' pipe?

I just painted them for looks, they just had an unfinished look to them out of the box. The Ford truck shorties bolt up to the stock y-pipe without any modifications required. Oh yeah I have them on my 95 f150 with a 5.0 SEFI engine (check signature), they make a noticable power difference but I'm running a complete aftermarket exhaust from the headers back so I'm sure that makes a difference. If you have a good air intake and aftermarket exhaust I'm sure they would be a worthwhile mod

Again, more good information. Thanks! I'm still kinda new to the forum, so I didn't realize how to check the sigs, but I do now! Sounds like a neat truck.

Did the Ford Racing headers enhance the sound any? Now that ive seen these, and that there stainless steel for $300, i really want to get them especially since my passenger side manifold is cracked.

Yes they improved the sound of the exhaust and increased the under hood sound a little bit. I had my Ford shorties off and my stockers back on for a day awhile back ago and could tell right away the exhaust was quieter and it didn't seem to have as much pep, so they must have helped.

I am getting ready to install some on my truck. I'm curious what the stock pipe diameter is? Mine are going on a 66 f100 with an old shelby Paxton blower. 2.5 inch pipes seem big. 2 1/4 inch pipe should give a little better torque. Are the ball seals 2.5 inch and the pipes 2.25. I would like to go with two 2 1/4 inch pipes into a muffler and 1 3 inch tail pipe.

Thanks
Brian

Brian the measurements you have are correct. Since your engine is blown 2 1/2" pipe might not be a bad idea, but like you said the smaller pipe will make better low end torque.
