96 Explorer, rotors

How do you remove the front and rear rotors on a 4WD?
Can you bang them off the hubs, or do you need a puller?

The fronts should come off easy. The rears are stubborn, bang them off with a big hammer. Sometimes the e-brake shoes need to be retracted as well.

So bottom line is, they both bang off? No special tools?

Getting conflicting answers here.

Who has actually done it? That is the first important question that needs to be answered.
And...did you use a puller or bang them off with a hammer?

Might want to re-read the posts; they actually are saying the same things, just missing some punctuation. The answer: no special tools, only a hammer if necessary. Judging by both 95EXPLEDBAU and Msp541 previous posts, they both have done it before.

I have taken front and back rotors off my '99 with a hammer and a small amount of penetrating oil (don't use too much or it will get on brake components and cause problems) or emery cloth. Just try not to damage or warp anything when hammering. A big hard rubber mallet helps protect things and still adds the force to move them.

This is prolly too late.

I did it just today. I used a hammer.
I prolly could have gotten away with a smaller hammer if I had backed off the park brake shoes first.

Thanks for the insight in this thread folks. Tonight I took it upon myself to replace the rotors and pads on the front end of my 97 Mountaineer. As described... a little help with a rubber mallet and it came right off... sweet!

After the replacement the pedal pulse in the brakes is gone (expected that) but so is the vibration I was getting at 65 to 75mph. It was like sitting in one of the massage chairs! While I had the front end up off the ground I also checked all the other components and they look good and there was no apparent play in the bearings or linkage. So now I need to go check the rear end to see if I can track down my 55mph shimmy.

Sometimes you do need a puller. This is after the sun wrench and BIG hammer fail
