Smile Covers and Door Panels

I have a 86 full size bronco. The dash was cracked and the door panels were trashed when I got it. I checked out the JC Whitney catalog and saw that you could get replacements from a company called Coverlay I think. I bought the dash cover and 2 door panels for about 1/2 of what JC Whitney and other places wanted for them. I couldnt believe how good the dash cover fit. You just attach it with a spot of glue in about 4 places. The color was a perfect match and the way it blends in you cant even tell its a dash cover. It is the hard plastic like the original. The door panels were nice too I ordered the ones with the padded armrest in them. They even include the push in clips color matched to attach the door to the panel. The only thing I didnt like was the speaker grills that were built in to them. sort of like a 5 x 5 square of holes drilled. I had installed some 6 inch Infinity speakers in the door panels and 1/3 of the speaker was blocked. I just drew a picture of the speaker radius on the door panel and with a 1/4 inch drill bit added a few more holes. The panels attach like a charm and are easy to remove if you need to get to the window motors which I did on a few occasions.

Hope this might help someone

John

Not sure where you got that price? I bought mine last year and they were only about 185 dollars for both sides driver and passenger. The dash cover was only 99.00 and no one can even tell its a cover it fits that good. The color match impressed me. I have the 86 Eddie Bauer and the top of the dash was sun rotted but it I got the tan cover and it match both the new door panels and the original interior plastic pieces perfect. I thought originally it would be darker since the Bronco had been around a few years but I guess I got lucky and the orginial plastic pieces hadnt faded over the years. Perhaps the price on the door panels went up. If your panels dont have any cracks or tears then repainting them is a great option. I just did the interior plastic in my 85 mustang with a plastic dye instead of the traditional paint. You can get the dye at any auto parts store and it impregnates itself into the plastic so you dont have the eventual cracking and peeling as with paint.

Have a good one.

Just rechecked the panels at coverlaymfg.com A pair of the door panels is 184.00. They only sell them as a pair. I think there were more like 265.00 in the JC Whitney catalog.

Actually it does look like the 184.00 pair only covers up to 1987 models. In looking at their site it looks like the design of the panel changed in 1988 and it looks like the 245.00 price for the pair would be correct.

Is that the place out of Canada or Ohio I think that has a thick catalog? If so while I havent ordered anything from them yet, if you look at their catalog they have every nut bolt and screw ever made for a Bronco and also have a catalog for Mustangs, Camaros, and Firebirds as well.

Those catalogs are outstanding....They have parts you cant even get at the dealers anymore. I went to the Ford dealer to get the rubber weather stripping and gaskets for the back window of my 86 Bronco and the guy in parts said they didnt even make them any more.

Thanks for the response.
