Wheel weight damage

My sons 94 sport has factory wheels and the previous owners didn't seem to worry about where they put the balance weights. Does anyone have a solution to getting the residue from the old weights off the rims. The rest of the rim looks great and I would like to dress the wheels up! Am I wrong in assuming that the weights can be put on the inside of the rims?

Spin (dynamic) balancing requires that the weights are placed on both sides of the rim to offset any heavy spot on the assembly and to offset any heavy spot on either side of the centerline that might cause a wobble.
some rims will accept a clip-on weight and others require weights that are mounted with an adhesive. weights normally are visible and not easily hidden.

Some tire shops, such as Tire Discounters, offer alum. wheel refinishing. You might check with one of them. I have the same problem, the weights scratched my wheels. My weights are now all on the inside of the rim, and I don't have any problems with them after 30,000 miles. Am considering checking into the refinishing, just have other priorities right now.
