Question 400 Power

My Standard Catalog of American Light-Duty Trucks lists the 351M stock power ratings 156 nhp @ 4000rpm and 262 lbs.-ft. torque @ 2200rpm but has no listing for the 400M. Was wondering if anyone knows the stock power ratings for this motor?

What year? Maybe because there's no such thing as a 400M?

Nope no 400M. The only engines that Ford used a letter designator on were 3 of the 4 351's the 351C/W/M. The other 351 was designated a 352 as part of the FE engine family. They all have the same bore and stroke hence the need to differentiate. The 351C/M and 400 are part of the 335 engine family not the M family. The M designation only appeared when the 351M engine was produced long after the 400 was introduced. The 351M/400 block is sometimes referred to as the M-block for convenience but the original 400 block had no such designation.

In 1971 the 400 was listed as:
260 BHP @ 4400 RPM with 400 lb-ft @ 2200 RPM

In 1972 the 400 was listed as:
168 NHP @ 4200 RPM with 297 lb-ft @ 2200 RPM
these figures varied with applicaton and varied widely with year of production.

Even if there is no official recogntion of "400M", everyone knows what engine he means. Arguing about semantics when all he wanted to know was how much horsepower the engine was rated at!

-And I told him and hopefully educated him also.

Perpetuating misinformation is not good.

Except for the authors of the book he was looking at. He may find what he is looking for in the book if he looks for the "400".

If I could interject for a brief minute .

Please understand that there is never any malice intended when there are corrections made. Sometimes it is difficult for Moderators or Administrators to make it through each and every day going over every post in every forum, sorting, suggesting, moving, answering every thread.

Ford... in its infinite wisdom made things that related/associated so many things it is hard to keep things straight ..this is what makes FTE so important to all.
There are so many mistakes in Books & even here on FTE,we are only trying to be diligent to keep things as factual.

I too have been guilty of *Correcting* terminology here on FTE.
My feeling is.... I spend so much time learning to try make sure things are correct (terminology) as to make is Easy for the *Reader* to read that I forget how little the mistake was. (To me ..Terminology was everything.)

My personal thought.... is to have the FTE user be associated with the most Sound & TRUE information available. In the course of this,ANY FTE user could be at fault for trying to correct people and their terminology.

It is Not meant to insult Anyone..it is only meant as trying to keep things *Correct* so the wrong info is not spread around.

Many times I wish that we could all have the benefit of seeing & hearing the tone of voice of everyone.... when they respond to threads.

well, going by my highly calibrated butt-o-meter, the 400 found in my 78 f250 4x4 has a gross hp rating 53bhp @ 2200 rpm, and a gross torque rating of 88 ftlbs at 1500 rpm. redline is about 3000-3200, or whenever the valve float gets too bad for you to cope.

feel free to quote these figures, they are quite accurate i assure you

sorry, i had to....
