It was hot - Van Quit!

The temperature outside was in the high 80s.

After driving for a couple of hours, under load, up a hill, the van would start to shudder in the downshift.

After a while, the van would quit completely. Oil pressure would drop to 0 and the engine would shut down.

Water temperature was normal and coolant was fine. No overheat indication.

After waiting about 15 minutes the van would start again and drive for about 20-30 minutes before shutting down.

The next day, with air temp in the mid 70s, the van would not quit. The shudder is still there under load however.

Questions:

What would cause the van to shut itself down under hot temps?

Is the shudder related? If so, why doesn't the van shut down when its cooler?

Would the computer shut things down if the ATF is too hot?

Have you checked or replaced anything yet? My 96 4.0L has exhibited the same syptoms twice before. First time was clearly the fuel filter that was plugged up (not sure if heat was a factor or not).

Second time around, I changed the fuel filter again (it had some restriction in it). My wife is driving the van down to her mom's today, so I'll soon know if the filter fixed the problem, or if something else is going on.

I thought it was a transmission problem. I pulled the pan and the fluid was not burned and there was no metal in the pan.

I thought the tranny was maybe overheating and would shut things down.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jeff. But why would a plugged fuel filter cause a bigger problem in the heat than when its cooler?

If the Engine runs lean cause of fuel restriction then it will get hot and shut down. You could also have a bad wire somewhere or a coil pack is over heating.

I've heard that some of the Aeros have a vapor lock problem. The fuel lines get too hot over the top of the motor and cause the fuel to vaporize in the lines causing this problem.

There seems to be a lot of things it could be. It did give me a CHECK ENGINE notification.

I guess I should probably shell out the money and see what the computer can tell me, huh?

Or will it tell me what I need to know?

Ignition module is in the PCM.

Isn't that a last resort? Can a diagnostic tell me if this is bad?

There is FREE code reading at most auto parts stores. Make a few calls to find one in your area.

Get the codes read, otherwise you are just going to be throwing parts at it instead of diagnosing the problem.

Get them and come back here with the numbers, then we will be able to help you.

The ignition module should be on the passenger side fender mounted in a heat sink. You can remove it (heat sink and all ) and have it tested at Auto zone but I would have them read the codes first. If its a EECIV computer you can get a haynes manual and an old style volt/ohms meter (one with a needle) and following their direction read them yourself but its a pain. If there are no codes and ignition module checks out you can pull the coil and have them check it too. I have never heard of vapor lock problems on Areostars, I bought mine new in 94 and have lived in Vegas since 96 and even on 115 degree days have not had vapor lock. For the most part on fule injected engins this does not happen because of the fuel return line back to the fuel tank keeps the fuel flowing so there is none sitting around the engine compartment soaking up heat.

Got the codes read: P0305

#5 cylinder missfire

This explains the shudder up the hill. Van still runs fine now when cooler. No problem.

So, #5 missfire when its hot. No missfire when cool.

Will quit all together when hot (sometimes).

Suggestions?

I would change that plug again. I have replaced plugs and would have one go out on me and it would make my Van shake like hell going up hill.

I now buy all my plugs at the Dealers Parts Counter and never had anymore bad plugs.
