I ahve a 99 F150. 4.2 with 116k miles. It runs fine. Check engine light came on and took it to get the code read. P0401. EGR Flow.
After doing some searching on here, it could be the EGR Valve or another sensor that causes this error. I think one post said that if it is high mileage and running fine (no studdering while idleing) then it is the sensor. If it is a rough idle, its the valve.
Quesion #1 ... What should I try...
Question #2 ... Where is the EGR valve located at? Is this a change I can do or should a mechanic do? How much is the replacement valve? Or how should I clean the current one?
I had an identical problem in my 2000 Ranger. I would try the EGR sensor. I tried the EGR valve first and of course it didn't work. After replacing the sensor, I never had a problem again. The new sensor for the Ranger just had two mounting screws and two hoses connecting it, so it was very easy to replace. Don't remember the cost, but it was under $100 about two years ago. I'm not sure where it is on the 99 F150, but a quick look in a Chilton's manual will tell you. Hope it helps.
