Breaking in a 6.0

Hello and thanks in advance to all of your advice. Just traded in my hemi gas loving dodge for a 04 6.0 built 06/04. Please answer the following:

1) After starting a cold engine, how long should I let it warm up before driving? Any diff's if already warm?

2) What Oil should be used and at what mileage have you been changing with moderate towing?

3) Seems like a lot of problems with the 6.0 listed on this site, is it that bad, did I make the right choice?

4)Any other advice to a first time Ford, Diesel, 6.0 owner.

Thanks, Ford F250 Lariat 4x4 CC 6.0 FX4

Welcome to FTE
Check the rules...that one's a *Standard Operational Procedure*
You won't be let down. There are a number of "6-Oh Naysayers" here, some of them rightfully so from their experiences. However, the majority of experiences are of a very positive nature, and you should not worry yourself about it. You will be happy.

However, both of the main subjects you addressed (Engine warmup and oil) are the FTE equivalents to the *shot heard round the world*. Be careful when addressing these issues here However, I can assure you that you are about to get more answers than you can handle.

So far, I have used nothing but Motorcraft oil and filters. I plan on switching oils following reinstallation of one of my new motors (scan through the Water/Methanol injection thread if want to know about why I'm waiting on motors) but have not decided just what kind I will use.
As for warm-ups, *most* people here generally let the truck idle until the coolant temperature gauge rises onto the first bar on the gauge, and keep the motor under 2000-2500 rpm's until it reaches standard operating temperatures. My general habit is to let it idle enough to get into the first bar on the gauge and then drive it like I stole it

Welcome !!!!!

I'm one of those "think I'm still in a gasser" types that doesn't even wait on the glow plugs, much less sit there at idle - I just crank my motor and go !
This is the third diesel I've had and I have 32K+ miles on it without incident

Granted, I'm easy on it when i first start out and it's still cold, but I am of the opinion that this thing with 700+ ftbs of torque is not working that much harder to idle easily down the road as just sitting there @ idle

Caveat though - I am in Texus... so it's not overly "cold" here....
the weatherman calls our cold fronts "Less Hot Fronts" !
