Change spark plugs on aluminum head engines cold . Use some anti seize on the threads of the new plugs . It all depends on the age & condition of the wires as to whether they need replacing . OEM plug wires last much longer than they used to last . If you have the originals on your Explorer then you may want to look into replacing them . Also , The Ford / Motorcraft parts may be more $$ but they work much better than a lot of aftermarket parts .
I had a plug wire fail on my 98 Explorer with only 60K miles. I suspect it had been mechanically damaged. That is the main problem when changing plugs. Sometimes the wire boots are stuck to the plugs, and are so inaccessible, that they are damaged when removed. I would plan on changing the plugs only, and if any extra stress is applied to any of the wires during removal replace them. Otherwise, use the originals and monitor for misfires.
