I have a 1981 f-100 w/6 cyl and 1 bbl carb. On the equipment going from the smog pump to the intake just under the carb, a part separated from what looks like a pipe fitting that is screwed into the intake. I would like to know how it was attached and what it is called. It is about 1-1/2" in dia and appears to have a small spring and a baffle of some sort inside it. I can't determine how it was attached. There is also a bigger cannister with a vacuum fitting also in the line closer to the smog pump. Any info would be of great help...
Thanks, Gene
the part that screws into the bottom of the carb is an egr pipe, it returns gases from the catalytic converter. the part that screws into the carb gets brittle after about 20 years of being heated and cooled on an inline 6 since it is just above the manifold. i had to replace mine on my 84 last year and it ran me 30 bucks, you would be surprised how many parts stores have no idea what it was, i went to advanced auto and autozone and napa, all had no clue. I took it to my uncle who works at a local parts store and he told me what it was and had to order it in for me. if you have any trouble along the way replacing it just ask me, i had to replace mine last year and know how to do it pretty good

that is the AIR injection. the EGR has a metal pipe, whereas the smog is rubbery.
i guess i need to ask, are you talking about a metal pipe that screws into the bottom of the carb and then runs into a rubber line, then runs into another metal line, then which goes to the cat, or is this the one that breman is talking about?
A hose comes off the air pump and to a "canister" about 3-4 inches tall and about 1 1/2 in dia. with a vacuum line atached. That is the bypass valve or diverter valve. A hose comes off the the diverter valve and goes to the "air pump exhaust check valve" or "air check valve. This valve screws into the EGR spacer. It has standard pipe threads.
Thanks s_labsownus!!! You are the only one who seemed to understand what I was trying to describe. It is indeed the air pump exhaust check valve that I couldn't identify. Is this valve part of the fitting that is still screwed into the intake or does it attach to the fitting?? It is detached and I can't figure what held it to the fitting! I also can't seem to get the fitting loose from the intake. I sure hope i don't have to remove the carb to get at it better.
Their is two types with two versions!
The 2 versions are:
1. about 2 inches long
2. About 4 inches ling
The 2 types:
1. has external threads or male fitting
2. hae internal threads or female fittings
Most carbed engines had that I have seen had version 1, type 1.
A pair of pliers or pipe wrence should remove the old valve.
Advance Auto lists them with pictures.
