1993 F150 XLT Super Cab, 5.0, E4od 140k miles... Two piece drive shaft.
I need to replace the U-joints. Any tricks to make removing the pressed in side easier to remove? Should I tackle this my self or just take the drive shaft out & take it to a drive line shop?
Also, how do I know if the carrier bearing is still good? Does it wear out? Should it be replaced along with the U-joints?
There are u-joint presses that can be used. I've used a C-clamp before and have also beat them out with a hammer, an impact socket and a block of wood. The carrier bearings usually wear out in the rubber bushing that surrounds the bearing. If it's loose in the mounting clamp, it's worn out. On my F350, it had to be pressed off and on. I learned that buying a carrier bearing/bushing from the local driveline shop was about 1/3 the price of a new one from Ford, and the one from the driveline shop was Timken, a good brand. Also, the Spicer Life u-joints (no grease fittngs) are the good ones.

OK, crawled under the truck to see if I could move the drive shaft. It had about a 1/4" of play in the rubber bushing at the carrier bearing.
There was also grease from the U-joint right behind the carrier bearing slung on the side of the front gas tank. I'm assuming that the pins are completely gone in one of the caps allowing the grease to be thrown out.
Thanks for the input. Found a place in Garden Grove to do the work. I carry in the drive shaft, they replace all three U-joints with OEM sealed parts, replace the carrier bearing & balance the drive shaft for right at $200, all the same day. Beats the hell out me killing myself to get it done on a weekend in the garage vice.
