Last week I took my 95 explorer to Midas because a friend had a friend whoo worked there and was gonna do me a "favor" or cut me a break. I had purchased the egr valve and oxygen sensor and had asked him to replace those and to check brakes ujoints do a wheel alignment and rotate and balance tires. Instead he said he didn't do the egr because he didn't want to break it, so instead he just pulled one of the hoses off and stuck a wood screw in it to plug it. He did the alignment rotated and balanced the tires and did a oil change i didn't even ask them to do. Oh, and he did replace the front ujoints9the ones on the transfer case) Now this all cost me 250.00 but i still had the egr and o2 sensors i had bought, and i got a new 2 dollar oil filter, when i had just changed my own oil less than a month and a half ago and had a nice $15 filter on it that they just threw away. When i picked up the truck he told me about the egr and told me if it was just the check engine light bothering me i could put black tape over it to where i didn't see it, at that point i realized i had made a reall big mistake trustung them to fix anything. Less than 6 hours later driving 70mph my truck just died and won't start. It was 2 in the morning and i wqas pissed. I knew Midas had screwed it up, Turned out they couldnn't have because it was the fuel pump inside the tank, bad luck huh ?? Anyways check engine light still comes on and stays and i pulled out his woodscrew idea and connected the hose back to the egr, now the problem is after the alignment and balance the front driver side has this thumping kind of noise like flat or being on a rough interstate, it didn't start until the day i picked it up from them, also they said i had 40%left on my brakes. Please help please thanks sorry so long
my sincere condolences, 1st mistake: going to midas. ur truck shouldnt have died, or at least it shouldnt be thumping. i cant believe it, black tape over check engine light so u can ignore it?!?! thats nuts. regardless, even if it was ur friend, midas did do service on ur vehicle that u did not authorize. they threw away a perfectly good filter, did work u didnt want, didnt do work that u wanted and charged u for it?!?! and waaayyy overcharged u, $250 for what? now if this was me, i wouldnt have paid them, u were taken advantage of, i'm sorry this happened to u, it really sucks. what u can do, i'm not sure where u are located, so i can only offer general advice as to what to do. u could file a civil suit, get back money u paid plus whatever it would cost to repair ur vehicle. u should probably go back to midas, ask to speak with supervisor (i hope the guy who killed ur truck wasnt the super), and show him what they did, if they wont fix their shoddy work (which they should, and get EVERYTHING in writing, and dont pay a dime, this is going to be messy, legally) then take vehicle to dealership or a truly good mechanic and have them assess the damage, most of the time they can find out what work was shoddy and what was not (cause of death, or thumping sound, was it really midas). some states require u legally to have the mechanic shop who did the original bad job to redo it at least once, a second chance, if they fail again, then u can seek outside help. i would seek legal counsel, and file a complaint with the better business bureau, if this doesnt get resolved to ur satisfaction. hope this helps, it isnt all hopeless, just a big headache, good luck, and dont ever go to midas ever again. went once, never again, tried to talk me into replacing my whole brake system, bull. all i needed were new rotors on the back and new pads. thats it. as a woman, they treated me like i was a moron, like i had no clue what a "rotor" or "caliper" was and how much it should cost.
anyway, good luck to u
