my truck was running fine then one day I went to start it and all I got
was a clicking noise. first I thought it was my battery so I changed
it end the engine started, but when in park or neutral all I could hear is
the clicking noise sounds like it wants to keep starting up. I put in
drive and the noise disapeared I took for a drive with the lights on
and after half an hour I started losing electrical power until it was all
drained and the motor stopped. my auto electrican put a start push button
in to correct his by not turning the key all the way to start. This was ok for
a few days but now it wont start again the battery is flat and It seems
that something is on draining it .
can any help as I havent a cue , and by the looks of it either does my
auto electrican
thanks yabbie55

Do you have a voltmeter? If so, check the voltage at the battery with the engine off. Then check the voltage at the battery with the engine running. The running voltage should be higher. If the voltage stays the same or is lower, then the alternator is not charging. If you want to, you can go to some auto parts stores and they will check your system to see if it's charging.
If it's charging then you must have a parasitic drain. Here's how to check for a drain.
If you have a drain, then pull the wire off the alt to see if the light goes out. If it does, then there is something wrong with the alt. You can also pull fuses out of the fuse box till the light goes out. This will narrow down the drain if it's in a fuse box circuit.
I have searched my issue and believe the problem here is as close to my problem as it gets. However, I had a few questions in addition. I too have a similar drain on the battery. I recently disconnected the battery to recharge it. When I put it back in I noticed that the positive wire wasn't as tight as it should have been so tightened it. When I did the fusible link that runs from the alternator to the starter relay burned. (Right before my eyes). I replaced the fusible link and ran the test described (negative post to test light to negative cable). I got a light. Here's my situation. When I pull the alternator harness, the light does not go out, until I pull the voltage regulator harness, then it does. If they are both pulled, no light. One or the other connected, light. I had the alternator tested and it was okay. Could a faulty voltage regulator cause this problem, given the alternator causes the light to come on too? Can the alternator be bad (drawing a current), even though it checked okay. I can't even hook up the battery because I risk burning the fusible link again. Any suggestions?
I had the alternator replaced on the 77 Versailles in Calgary the day after the shop put a new battery in it & did not test it further. There was a 5 amp short in the alternator that would drain the (single) battery over night.
