I have a 351m in my 79 250 4x4. I just recently put a single 40 series flowmaster with a 3" exhaust cat back on her. In three years I intend on rebuilding the original to a 400, with some torque mods. Is there a performance increase from the single to dual with what I have? and would it be better NOT to run dual with what should be about a 406 displacement? Also, how the heck is my truck any quieter than an old chebby 350 of the same vintage???/ I dont get it...! Some suggestions would be much appreciated... ( The reason for the single right now is current CA smog reservations) Should I decrease the diameter of pipe when I put the rebuilt engine back in? Sheesh, too many questions...
hey nice truck there i got the same one and did the same thing with the flowmaster 40 series. only thing i just slapped on the muffler and threw on about a foot and a half of pipe so the lame smog guys can get there stick in there in ca where im at. i was also wondering about this. I plan on building the 351m in mine up and i was gonna shoot for 360 hp and close as i can to 500 ft lbs. what all are u going to do to ur 351 to give it most of the torque?
Torque1st has a build I was going to reshape my plans to, but he has yet to get back to me. I always follow proven builds, but I had bought a bunch of parts, and decided it wasnt such a good matchup. I'll get back to you soon!
The chev could be quieter because of the differences in converters, but I am guessing that it is just in the manifolds and heads. A buddy of mine has a 400 with true duals (2.25") and Thrush Magnums and it is quieter than his 318 Dodge or my 360 Dodge with the same exaust. Actually it is quieter than his brother's 350 Chev that also has the same exaust but in a 2" the 400 still sounds better though. It's better not to compare to other makes of trucks.
Could also be firing order, most likly not but some people have said that here in town. I am gonna stick with the manifolds, I think the 351M/400 are a bit more restrictive than the chev and dodge have. Then again dosen't the 351W sound different than the M AND 400 too? A bit more like the chev and dodge? I never really pay attention to the small block fords but i think they do.
