Sorry to dominate the board. if there is no clutch master cylinder on an 1981 f 150 , it must be a manual clutch, correct? Therefore, to adjust I should tighten the cable undr the drivers seat , right? Also , on this truck , how do I check the trans. fluid? And should I refill w/ motor oil or atf fluid?

thanks again

Hello,
First the Clutch...

The cable under the cab below the drivers seat is for the Parking brake.

The Clutch linkage should be visable in the engine compartment. Have a friend work the clutch as you watch. Follow the linkage, You may have to be under the truck. you will notice a "nut and sleeve" (adjusting rod) hooked to the linkage and fitted into a dimple of "more linkage" (clutch release lever) that enters the tranny. Adjust the clutch to 1/2 to 2 inch freeplay.

The Tranny...

Depending on which transmission you have it will depend on how much 80W gear oil you need to fill it in a complete oil change.

Look at the inner door piller on the drivers side and there will be a sticker (certification lable) with information.

Look at your transmission code, it will be either a "B", "A" or "F".

Code B: Clark Manual Four Speed Overdrive: Capacity: 4.5 quarts of 80W gear oil

Code A: New Process 435 Manual 4 Speed: Capacity: 7.0 quarts of 80W Gear oil

Code F: Borg-Warner T-18 Manual Four Speed: Capacity: 7.0 Quarts of 80W gear oil

To check there will be two square headed "bolts" on the passenger side of the truck. Remove the top one. If oil comes out, level is fine. If oil didn't, add oil until it does.

To change remove the bottom square "bolt" and let the oil drain out into a oil recycle container, (You may want to drive the truck to get the lubricant hot, so it flows easier) replace "bolt" (plug) and fill with proper level of 80W Gear oil.

Hope this helps,
