Hey all. I have an 87 6.9. Today I went to start it and it would barely turn, then started clicking. Now it will not turn at all. The batteries and terminals are 3 months old. It is not a glow plug problem. It might be the starter? I am not very knowledgable under the hood. The truck is stuck in a parking lot 15 miles from my house. When I try to start it - The glow plugs warm up like normal, then when I turn the key, it just clicks rapidly. My guess is the starter. What do you guys think? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Yup. Sounds like discharged batteries. Bring a friend and some heavy jumper cables. Have the friend turn on the headlights then try to crank the engine while you watch the headlights. They should stay relatively bright if the batts are OK. When you boost it with the other vehicle, you'll probably have to let it sit there connected (with the donor vehicle running) for 15-30 minutes to let the truck batts charge up....
Thanks Guys! You were all correct. I figured the batteries would not be the problem since they are new. Now I just need to figure out what is drawing power from the batteries. Thanks again!
