fast idle

Hi I've got a 1980 f-250 with a 302 the problem is when you start it it races at full throttle doesn't make any differnce if you step on gas or not it has a carter afb 4 barrel carb on it what could be causing this? junk carb? thanks Dave

Will the idle eventually drop down or does the engine race until you turn it off?

it races untill you shut of the engine

Here are some options:

1) vacuum leak
2) Idle set improperly

Make sure you time it when setting the idle.

turned out to be the throttle cable was binding up replaced it and problem solved. thanks for your replies Dave

tuffy, just so u know the cables from autozone, advanced auto, and pep boys are junk for the trucks. i put one from pep boys on my 84 with the 300 in it and it bound up after 12,000 miles, i've heard of others with similar probs. i then got one at autozone and used it for 2 days til my new one came into the ford dealer, i put the ford replacement in for the new autozone cable and man could i tell the difference in the ford cable. i am just telling u this so u don't end up like me with a hung open throttle on a back country road at 10:00 at night.
