I have a 93 F150 302 and the engine compartment is looking pretty bad. I was wondering if anyone has any good tips on how to clean the engine. Like when I bought it used from the dealer it was spotless. I dont like the idea of spraying everything with soap and water, too many electrical componets to short out. Any ideas would be great. Thanks!
Everyone has their on unique way...here's mine... I used Castol "Super Clean" spray eveything down under the hood... while it's soaking I brush any heavy areas with a wheel brush...then rinse! Since I like everything to look clean and bright I spray all the rubber and most of the underhood with Black Magic foaming tire shine. Bear in mind that this makes a mess all over the windows and body so it's done when I am ready to wash my truck. After a thorough washing I raise the hood and wipe any access tire shine off with clean towels... 185K later my engine compartment still looks new... I use a garden hose to wash it with and have never had a "water" related problem.
Oh...one last thing (well Two)...If you do use "Super Clean" (esp. full strength) wash any that you may get on the paint off or it streaks. Waxing takes out any streaks but I like to be safe. Also, Black Magic tire shine works great under the fender wells, the spare tire, even the axles if they are not to dirty if you want to keep that fresh clean look and doesn't build up like paint or under coating.
I don't cover anything either, and I don't have any problems. Water splashes up in your compartment when you are driving, anyway (especially while 4-wheeling ).
I normally take a plastic bag and wrap it around the distributor and just use any good cleaner (ex: tire cleaner, works good) and spray the compartment, scrub any bad spots, and powerwash. Try not to focus the spray of the powerwasher on any of the plugs, wires, etc....
Another thing i do after cleaning (if it needs it) is take a rag with some paint thinner/acetone to all the rubber/plastic that didnt come all the way clean.
Like said before using the shiny stuff when your all done helps too.
