92 Ford Explorer clunking
I am having some problems with my 92 Explorer when I fillup with 87 octane gas. It's ok for around town driving not over 55 or so, but on the highway when I excellerate to over 65 I get a lot of knocking, lose power which makes driving over the "mountains" here in Tennessee a real pain. I have no problem when I fill up with 93 octane but that gets expensive after a while. Anyone have a similar problems or can offer a suggestion I would appreciate it.

When I've had the same problem on my '92, I cleaned the m##### air flow sensor and repaired a leak in the air intake tube. My MAF wasn't very dirty, but it didn't hurt. What happens is that, with a dirty MAF and/or an air leak downstream from the MAF, the computer "sees" a lower amount of air than is actually going in, causing the engine to run lean which creates the ping.

My explorer does this also. I have to always put in 93 octane gas, but if i put in regular, it pings right off, not just over 55. even at idle. and it does get expensive. Also, the heater will make a pinging sound. could someone email me with instructions for dummies on how to clean whatever that was up there? im goin to try and do this myslef if its not to hard. thanks..
