losing pressure

ran pressure test on 1986 302 efi at fuel rail....key on pressure went to 40 lbs then dropped off to nothing...would not hold...started van and pressure was a steady 38lbs....ran codes and got a 31 and a 83...anyone have any ideas? I have had a few episodes of engine stumble and dying but it always restarts...

I know very little about these, but I believe the fuel is recyled back to the gas tank in a closed loop, which would imply there is some kind of regulator to check the return flow. Just an idea. GL

It is normal for the pressure to drop off after the pump it turned off. It shouldn't drop off immediately, but it will drop over a short period of time.
The fuel pressure is in the right area. Does the pressure increase when you remove the vacuum line to the regulator? It should. They usually run about 32psi idling with vacuum, 38-42 with no vacuum to the regulator.

I did'nt try the test with modulater vacuum off... It dropped off immediately when I turned key on though...It registered over 40 psi then went to zero in a few seconds....does a trouble code 83 coincide with the problem?
