I have a factory installed 12500# hitch, 3" drop HD solid shank, and 1-1/4" ball on an F-350 SRW 4X4 LB PSD truck.
I loaded up a dump trailer to about 8000# and the ride and handling was very squishy. The trailer is 10K rated. Everything rode level, but I did not like the feeling.
Obviously I need a WD setup for this much weight. What do I look for in a WD setup? I've read a little on the net and understand the concepts, but am unsure which parts and kit to order. The "Reese Strait-Line Hitch System 1200" system looks to be a combo WD and anti sway. Seems like a good idea. I guess I need a new shank either way. Can I re-use the ball?
Any info (and pointers to sponsor sites) appreciated.
You will likely be able to re-use the ball, so long as the new ballmount has the right size hole for your ball shank. The Reese Straight Line or Dual Cam is supposed to be one of the best weight dist/anti-sway hitches out there. I've never used that one so I can't say from experience but that's the buzz I hear on it. You need to weigh the tongue of the loaded trailer so you know what weight dist bar rating to use. For alleviating the squishy rear end feeling, a weight dist and antisway will help, as will a rear axle antisway bar, which I would think your truck should have on it already, as well as the overload leaf spring on top of the regular leaf pack, that F350's usually have. You should be running your tires at max pressure too (checked when cold). Other than that, some stiffer shocks would also help and of course you can always add air bag helper springs if you feel your springs are still too soft. The Reese factory website is www.reeseprod.com and you should be able to find any info you need on ordering there, or call them on thier tech line.
