High Idle Problems
Trying to figure out if any body else has had the same issue as me. I have a '04 Ranger with a 4.0 and 5-speed. Sometimes when I take the truck out of gear and let it coast the engine will rev to 2000 RPM's and not come down until the truck stops. I took the truck to the shop and they could not figure it out so they claimed The called the Ford tech hotline and they told them that it is supposed to do this and it is for emission purposes. I do not know if I buy this at all so I was just wondering if anyone else has had their ranger act like this. Any feedback would be greatly appriciated.

I would say it is at least parially true. A dramatic drop to idle can increase emissions. The good smog check people in CA will reduce the rpm from the high speed test to the low speed test slowly to reduce the risk of you failing the emissions test.
I would try disconnecting the battery to clear the computer. Maybe something went wrong as it was learning your driving habits. It may also be a slow reacting sensor but I am not knowledgable enough to tell you what they may be. Maybe the MAF or O2 sensors.

My 03 4.0 does this occasionally as well. Only once or twice a month. I really don't think much about it since it happens so infrequently. Pretty random event, I never know when it's going to do it.

That would be a problem with the TPS (throttle position sensor) connector. I can't believe ford hasn't fixed this problem yet. My 98 Ranger does it. Here is a post a while back all about this: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=236750
