Okay, I somehow managed to do a really stupid thing and broke the bracket that bolts the transfer case gear shift to the transmission. Don't ask me how.
After a fair amount of cursing, I realized there is some sort of "selector" under the truck has two rubber boots on it. The whole thing is rusted as one peice, but it looks like this should actually move? What does it do? It's what connects the actual shifter stick to the linkage that goes to the transfer case. I am pretty sure that this is supposed to move...and since it did not, something had to give. Crap. At least it's driveable right now, just can't shift the transfer case out of 2WD
Anyway, is there a technical term for this part? I need to make a trip to the junkyard or something to get a new one and I don't know what it's called. It's a BW 1356 transfer case, truck is a 94' F250.
I broke mine last year removing the transmission. I was able to TIG Weld it just fine. You could take it in to a welding shop, I am sure it would be less than $20
When I noticed it was aluminum, I wasn't sure how well it would weld up. I wound up drilling and tapping two bolt holes across the broken parts and so they are basically screwed together now. Very ghetto, but functional.
I found that after taking it apart and cleaning out all of the rust that has built up in it (it's was completely seized) that the selector move VERY easily and smoothly. The spring that makes you push down to put the trasfer case into N or 4Low was stuck so there was not way I could have gotten it into either gear before cleaning it.
I'm keeping the welding idea in mind though...we'll see how well my fix holds up. Thanks.
I Just Did The Same Thing. My Shifter Has Been Giving Me Greif For A Little While Now And I Just Never Got Arrounf To Cleaning / Lubeing It, So The Other Day While Is Was Stuck In The Mud I Pulled On It Reall Hard And.............
Anyway, I Think I'll Try To Get It Welded But I'd Like To Hear How Your Repair Is Holding Up.
Does Any One Know If Their Is An Alt To This Part? Aftermarket? Diy Contraptions? Pics Or Websites Would Help.
I found one at a junkyard for $30, which down in NC where there is little salt/rust these parts last a long time. I never found it available aftermarket and the Ford dealer wanted $400 for it. Cleaning it helped for a bit, but it was already getting tough to shift again.
