FT oilpan/windage question

Slowly but surely my motor is getting closer and I have another question.

I will be running an FT oil pan and im wondering if it is ok to use the standard dipstick threw the block or must i use the FT dipstick (threw the pan)?

Im also thinking that with all that oil, a windage tray seems almost essential. The motor will see about 5500 maybe 6 with a different cam and in the off road or a steep hill it seems like 10qts of oil hitting the crank is major cause for not only a lot power loss, but major oil leaks. Do i need a tray or not? What you think?

fling, i'm running a FT pan that has the pan dipstick welded up, using above filter dipstick. Welded in a 2" wide 14 gauge plate all around the inside that pitches 30 degrees down plus a center baffle with rear sump pickup. Also Installed a windage tray, never had a problem with oil hitting the crank with hard launches or road race turns. I've run from the low of 10 quarts to 13 1/2 quarts, the oil filter holds 1 quart alone without any problems. Check clearances at the bottom or pan and the cross member, it's close. With new motor mounts I still had to run a 3/16" plate under each motor mount. Gool luck, Carl................................o&o>.......... ........................

I run the same set up also. I use the front dipstick. A simple plug glued into the pan hole is all that was needed(since I forgot to weld it shut before I installed it).

I installed a couple baffles in the bottom of the pan to help with slosh. A couple inches tall, strategically placed and raised off the bottom a 1/4" for flow underneath. A stock windage tray was used also.

I would reccomend welding a short stainless bolt to the windage tray for mounting the pickup tube support to. The original FT blocks had a tapped hole, and with a windage tray it would not work no matter what. I used a 1/4" bolt and nylok nut to connect it. Simple and effective.

Sorry no pictures to show what I did.

I would think you can run the standard block dipstick. I mean, oil level is oil level in relation to the crank, no matter how big the pan.

rusty70f100; With a front sump engine the block dipsticks ok, when you extend the sump as on the FT sump plus the down pitch of the engine to the rear with 11-13 quarts it gets close to the crank. Without a windage tray and internal deflectors you'll run the chance of oil splashing up on the crank. Take a long level and place it beside the pan at about where your oil level is and note the level location at rear of sump.
If you drive agressively or do the twisties you'll splash the crank, maybe with fresh tight engine the oil rings will keep the oil out of the combustion. I rather be safe with baffles and deflectors. Carl.....................o&o>..................... ..........................
